There are two basic types of marketing – inbound and outbound. The focus of each is different and they involve different strategies and techniques.

Inbound marketing is about using marketing to bring potential customers to you, rather than having your marketing efforts fight for their attention. Sharing is caring and inbound marketing is about creating and sharing content with the world. By creating content specifically designed to appeal to your dream customers, inbound attracts qualified prospects to your business and keeps them coming back for more.

Outbound marketing casts a wide net with the hope of catching a few customers from a sea of loosely targeted consumers. Broadcast and print advertising, billboards, telemarketing and direct mail are all examples of traditional outbound marketing that businesses impose on consumers without regard for the consumers’ desire to receive it. We’ve covered many examples of Outbound marketing in our Marketing Bullhorn series: Direct Mail Pros and Cons, Trade Show Marketing Strategy and Email Marketing Pros and Cons.

The marketing landscape has changed drastically.  Outbound marketing means putting your message in front of people whether they want to hear it or not. As a result, its techniques are often intrusive and annoying. People have begun to tune it out.

The Price of Inbound vs. Outbound Marketing- Outbound marketing is a very expensive endeavor.  The average cost per lead in North America is significantly less when using inbound marketing strategies. [Source: Hubspot state of inbound report, 2014].

With inbound marketing, you create content on your website/blog that is targeted to your primary market. With a good content marketing strategy, you can attract prospects to you.

Mix inbound and outbound marketing to attract customers and maintain your relationship with them. Take steps necessary to optimize your website and blog for search engines. Create original content that’s relevant to your business and your customers’ interests. Use Facebook posts and Tweets to announce new content on your website and blog. Resist the urge to spam. Inbound marketing holds consumer trust sacred. Your outbound efforts should, too.
